The Ultimate Dog-Friendly Guide to Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

The Ultimate Dog-Friendly Guide to Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

Posted by Debra Mastic on

If you’re planning a trip to Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Foley or Fort Morgan and wondering, “Are there any dog friendly beaches near Gulf Shores?” — the answer is yes! If you need a dog-friendly place to stay while you're visiting, check out the Gulf Coast RV Retreat, known for being one of the most dog-friendly stays in the area.

While dogs are not allowed on the main public Gulf Shores and Orange Beach beaches, there are still many amazing dog-friendly places nearby where your furry family member can enjoy the coast, play in the water, explore parks, and even grab a bite to eat with you.

The Best Hidden Dog-Friendly Spots in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

Fort Morgan Beach

One of my favorite dog-friendly beaches near Gulf Shores is Fort Morgan Beach. You can also explore the nearby historic Fort Morgan site with your pup, making it a fun stop for both sightseeing and beach time.

Fort Morgan actually has two beach areas — the more natural bayside beach with scenic grass, dunes, and driftwood is dog-friendly, while the Gulf-side beach is not. Be sure to bring plenty of water, shade and poop bags for your dog, as there are currently no poop bag stations available at the dog-friendly beach area and it can get hot.

Another Dog Beach Near Orange Beach

Spend an Afternoon at Pirate’s Cove

Pirate’s Cove is a legendary laid-back coastal hangout near Orange Beach that many dog owners love visiting with their pups.

Known for beachy vibes, live music, bushwhackers, and waterfront views, Pirate’s Cove is one of those hidden gems that feels like “Old Florida” and coastal Alabama mixed together. You can let your dog run and play on the beach, splash in the calm clear water, and then grab a bite to eat while enjoying delicious hamburgers, chicken fingers, and other local favorites.

Bamahenge

After you visit Pirate's Cove, don't forget to check out Bamahenge! Yes… there’s a full-size Stonehenge replica in coastal Alabama.

Bamahenge is quirky, fun, free to visit, and surprisingly dog friendly. Your dog will enjoy the walk to the attraction, as well as the shade from the trees. If you’re road-tripping with your dog and want fun photo opportunities, this is a great quick stop between Gulf Shores and Pensacola.

Other Fun Dog-Friendly Places for Dogs in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach

Grab Food with Your Pup at Gelato Joe's

There are many dog-friendly restaurants in the Gulf Shores area, but Gelato Joe's is my favorite PAWS DOWN because they offer an affordable pet menu featuring a Tail-Waggin Meatball, Doggy Raman, and Ciao Chow Chicken Bowl and more...and their human food is amazing as well.

Stroll at the OWA Entertainment District

While dogs can't go to the amusement attractions themselves, the OWA entertainment district is still worth visiting if you’re in the area. OWA also does a number of dog-friendly events throughout the year so keep an eye on their events calendar.

You can stroll parts of the outdoor entertainment area, eat, shop, and enjoy the beautiful landscaping and fountains. My dogs enjoy all of the water features and fun things to sniff at OWA.

Take a Walk at Orange Beach Waterfront Park

This is one of the nicest pet-friendly parks in the area.

The waterfront walking paths, grassy areas, benches, and peaceful marina views make it a wonderful stop if your dog needs a break from the car ride. Many visitors love bringing their dogs here for sunset walks and dolphin spotting.

It’s especially good for dogs that may not be ready for busy beach crowds yet. Bonus: There are lots of squirrels at this park too!

One of Foley’s Best Dog-Friendly Walking Spots

One of the nicest places to take your dog for a relaxing walk in Foley is Heritage Park in downtown Foley. With its beautiful landscaping, paved walking paths, shaded areas, and charming small-town atmosphere, it’s a peaceful spot to stroll with your pup and enjoy the fresh air.

The park is surrounded by local shops, restaurants, and seasonal events, making it a fun and dog-friendly stop while exploring the Gulf Coast area. Our favorite restaurant within walking distance of the park is the Wacked Out Weiner where you can get a free hot dog for your pup and a hot dog meal complete with unlimited toppings, a side and a cool drink for an affordable price.

Dog-Friendly Shopping at Tanger Outlets Foley: A Fun Stop for You & Your Pup

If you’re visiting Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, or Foley with your dog, one surprisingly fun dog-friendly activity is taking a stroll through Tanger Outlets Foley. This open-air outlet mall is pet friendly, making it a great way to get out, stretch your legs, and enjoy some shopping with your furry travel buddy.

Unlike enclosed malls, Tanger’s outdoor layout makes it much more comfortable for dogs — especially during cooler mornings or evenings along Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Palm trees, sidewalks, benches, and plenty of outdoor walking space create a relaxed atmosphere for both people and pups.

Dog-Friendly Lodging

If you’re looking for a dog-friendly place to stay during your Gulf Coast getaway, check out the Gulf Coast RV Retreat — a spacious luxury RV located near the Fort Morgan dog beach. Your pup will feel right at home with a complimentary treat bar, cozy dog bed, and access to paved shaded walking trails and a nearby dog park, making it the perfect relaxing retreat for both people and pets.

From One Dog Mom to Another

As the founder of Fluff Trough and a fellow dog lover who enjoys exploring Alabama’s Gulf Coast with my own dogs, I know how important it is to find places where your pets truly feel welcome. Whether you’re visiting Fort Morgan Beach, walking through Heritage Park, or relaxing at a dog-friendly RV retreat, the Gulf Coast of southern Alabama can be an amazing getaway for both you and your furry family members.

If you’re not familiar with Fluff Trough, I invented this ergonomic feeder for my pug, Pork Chop, to help make mealtime healthier, safer, and more comfortable for dogs.
