When people see Fluff Trough today, they often see an award-winning elevated dog bowl that has helped pets in over 50 countries enjoy a safer and more comfortable mealtime experience.
What they don't always see are the years of rejection, uncertainty, and persistence that happened behind the scenes.
In fact, before Fluff Trough ever appeared on Buy It Now and caught the attention of Gwyneth Paltrow, I almost made it onto Shark Tank.

My Shark Tank Audition Experience
Like many entrepreneurs, appearing on Shark Tank was a dream of mine because I thought it was the only way to get noticed by an investor.
When I learned about an open casting call in Dallas, Texas, I decided to take a chance. At the time, Fluff Trough was still a young company, and I knew opportunities like this didn't come around every day.
I flew to Dallas and joined a massive line of hopeful entrepreneurs. We stood outside for hours in the cold, each of us wearing a Shark Tank wristband and hoping our idea would be the one that stood out.

Once inside, we were brought into a large room where the casting director explained what they were looking for during the initial audition process. The energy was exciting, but also intimidating. Everyone around me had a dream, a product, and a story.
After the presentation, we were divided into small groups of five and sent into audition rooms to deliver our pitches.
What surprised me most was how many distractions there were. People were talking, moving around, and pitching simultaneously. It wasn't the polished television environment viewers see at home. It was designed to test whether you could capture attention and communicate your story under pressure.
I gave it my best shot.
A few weeks later, I received exciting news: I had made it to the next round.
The Shark Tank casting team requested additional audition videos and more information about Fluff Trough. For a moment, I thought I might actually make it onto the show.
Then came the email that every entrepreneur dreads.
I didn't make it any further. This is a picture of me and the Shark Tank Casting Director in Dallas.

The Rejection That Almost Stopped Me
I'll be honest—I was discouraged.
As entrepreneurs, we often tie our hopes and dreams to opportunities like Shark Tank and I had to turn my attention back to growing Fluff Trough, improving our products and serving our customers.
Not long after, I connected with investors who believed in both the product and the mission behind it. Looking back, I realized I had put all of my eggs in one basket with Shark Tank, and it was not the only path to success.
Enter Buy It Now
Several years later, Fluff Trough was in a very different place.
We had grown significantly, expanded our product line, and built a passionate community of pet parents around the world.
That's when I received an unexpected message from a casting associate. They were working on a brand-new show called Buy It Now and wanted to learn more about Fluff Trough.
Unlike the Shark Tank open casting call, this time they came looking for me. I was in disbelief. They saw the Fluff Trough in a holiday gift guide and wanted to learn more about my entrepreneurial journey.
After an initial phone interview, I was invited to continue through the casting process.
The process was intense.
I completed multiple interviews, submitted extensive information about the business, and participated in additional auditions.
At one point, I received an email explaining what would be required to make it all the way onto the show:
- Approval from the show's internal executives
- Approval from the network executives
- Signing the show's standard television contract
- Passing a background check
Each step felt like another hurdle.
And unlike Shark Tank, where I had already experienced disappointment, I knew how important it was not to get my hopes up too early.
The Moment It Became Real
Eventually, I received the news every entrepreneur dreams about.
Fluff Trough had been selected.
After years of building the business, overcoming obstacles, and refusing to quit after rejection, I was finally going to appear on national television.
After months of preparation, I flew to Los Angeles to film the live show in the same historic studio where The Wizard of Oz was filmed.
The experience felt surreal from the very beginning. The production team picked us up in an unmarked van, and once we arrived, we went through hair and makeup before heading backstage.
It wasn't until the day of filming that I learned who the celebrity judges would be—including Gwyneth Paltrow—and that comedian JB Smoove would be hosting the show. As exciting as the experience was, one of the hardest parts was keeping the entire casting and filming process a secret for nearly a year before the episode finally aired!
Standing on the Buy It Now stage was one of the most surreal moments of my entrepreneurial journey.
I had just 90 seconds to tell the story of Fluff Trough and explain why this elevated dog bowl was different from anything else on the market.
No pressure, right?
Meeting Gwyneth Paltrow
One of the highlights of the experience was having the opportunity to present Fluff Trough to a celebrity judge panel that included Gwyneth Paltrow.
As an entrepreneur, you spend years talking about your product to customers, manufacturers, retailers, and investors.
Presenting it to celebrity judges on a major streaming platform is a completely different experience.
The feedback was incredibly rewarding because it validated years of hard work, persistence, and belief in an idea that started with my beloved pug, Pork Chop.

What I Learned From Almost Making Shark Tank
If there's one lesson I've learned, it's this:
Failure is a stepping stone to success. If I had made Shark Tank, my journey might have looked completely different.
Instead, I kept building.
I kept improving.
I kept showing up.
And eventually, that path led me to Buy It Now, where I had the opportunity to introduce Fluff Trough to an entirely new audience and share the mission behind our innovative elevated dog bowl.
Today, when people ask me about appearing on television and winning a show like Buy It Now, I tell them that success isn't about getting every opportunity you pursue—it's about accepting the opportunities that don't work out, learning from them, and continuing to move forward.
Not every door will open, and that's okay. What matters most is giving your best effort, staying persistent, and continuing to pursue new opportunities. Sometimes the path you originally wanted isn't the one that leads to your greatest success.
The Shark Tank experience taught me that rejection isn't failure; it's simply part of the journey. Stay authentic to who you are, build something you genuinely believe in, and don't start a business just to make money. Start a business to solve a real problem and make a meaningful difference for your customers.
If you consistently put your customers first, listen to their needs, and remain committed to your mission, you'll build something far more valuable than a product—you'll build trust. In my experience, those are the true building blocks of long-term success.
